"En el mismo emplazamiento actual, de las calles Caupolicán y O’higgins y en la esquina suroriente de la plaza, se encontraba la sucursal penquista del Banco de Chile.
Muy dañana por el terremoto del 24 de enero de 1939, los mismos vecinos ayudaron a derribar su fachada, que amenazaba con derrumbarse. A su izquierda, el majestuoso Portal Cruz muestra también los estragos del sismo y aunqeu sobrevive a ese sismo muy disminuido en su antigua prestancia, finalmente cae en el terremoto de 1960."

la foto parece una pintura, que increible la forma de derribarlo , menos mal que hoy en dia tenemos adelantos, que dificil habra sido en esa epoca!!
